Violent Crime Up Almost 80 per cent under Labour. Nearly 1.1 million violent crimes were recorded in 2007-8 – half a million more offences than in 1998-9 (Home Office, Crime in England and Wales 2007-8, 17 July 2008, Table 2.04).
400,000 More Families in Severe Poverty under Labour. The number of families living in severe poverty rose from 1.4 million in 1998-99 (the Government’s baseline for its child poverty measure) to 1.8 million in 2005-06 (Hansard, 6 March 2008, Col. 2816WA).

There are 1,162 quangos in the UK, costing the taxpayer £64 billion, equivalent to £2,550 per household, according to research by the Taxpayers’ Alliance. Even under the Cabinet Office’s restrictive definition of quangos, the cost of these bodies has risen 50 per cent in the last ten years (TPA, Quangos: the Unseen Government of the UK, May 2008).
Under labour, tax will go up for working families. In the 2008 Pre-Budget Report, Alistair Darling announced a National Insurance rise of 0.5 per cent for 2011 – just after a general election. Anyone earning over £20,000 will be worse off.
The Government is planning to borrow more over the next five years than the entire debt it inherited from all previous Governments put together (HM Treasury, Pre-Budget Report 2008).
