Waste Disposal in Wealden

East Sussex County Council are consulting about waste disposal arrangements in the County and have suggested a number of possible areas of search for land raise disposal sites in Wealden District.
This would mean unsightly and large piles of rubbish in a number of countryside locations.
Wealden Conservative Councillors have objected strongly to this. In our view land raise disposal of waste in an area of high environmental quality and sensitivity is quite unacceptable. Alternative methods of disposal are available and we should be looking for new opportunities for reuse, recycling, composting, energy generation and filling in available holes in the ground.
Land raise would be unsightly and obtrusive.
It would mean large amounts of waste being transported by HGV over inadequate roads. In our view, waste should be treated as near as possible to where it is produced.
There are also the problems of widespread pollution, harm to wildlife and damage to rivers and watercourses.
Councillor Roy Galley, who has responsibility for Strategic planning at Wealden Council said, ‘We are asking the County Council to think again. Their current proposals cannot be supported and we need more innovative solutions which are consistent with caring for our valuable and sensitive landscape and environment.’
