Monday, 06 September 2010 14:21 Hendry against landraise Wealden MP and Minister for Energy Charles Hendry comments on landraise consultation. ![]() Charles Hendry said: “I welcome the news that ESCC will continue to have an informal consultation with regard to the proposed landraise sites. “The new Government’s policies will make it more and more unlikely that new landfill or landraise facilities will be built, as costs of such approaches will continue to escalate. The Government will be developing a more joined up approach to waste, to achieve more from recycling and energy generation. “I recently visited the composting facility at Whitesmith and the Waste Transfer Station at Maresfield, to see the work going on, on the ground. These are very innovative methods of dealing with waste and we need to continue to look for 21st century solutions and move on from outdated ways of dealing with waste. “I will continue to ensure that my complete opposition to such inappropriate facilities will be relayed to the County Council.”

Friday, 13 August 2010 10:44 Death of Wealden's previous M.P.
Sir Geoffrey was Member of Parliament for the East Grinstead constituency from 1965 until the Parliamentary boundary changes effective in 1983 when he took the new seat of Wealden. This inherited the bulk of his old constituency, with the exception of the town which had given it its name. Sir Geoffrey remained Wealden’s Member until 2001.
One of nature’s “gentlemen”, he was held in great affection and regard by all in the constituency. In recent years he had not enjoyed good health and had withdrawn from public life.
We understand that Sir Geoffrey's funeral will be private but that a memorial service will be held in Westminster in due course. ..[more]Tuesday, 03 August 2010 09:06 Council Budget Savings Wealden Council makes significant savingsIn recent weeks there has been much comment on the actions the new Government has had to take to get the country’s finances in better shape after the excess spending undertaken by the previous Labour administration. Whilst the numbers may be large (£155 billion)the government is no different from every household and cannot continue spending more than it earns. The changes in public spending will mean that Wealden Council is likely to see reductions in its government grant of between 25% and 45% which could mean £3m coming off our annual spending of £19m. Whilst this will mean some difficult decisions need to be made and will affect service levels, the Council has planned ahead and already made some of the changes that will be needed to balance the budget.
