Working towards a Greener Wealden

Working towards a Greener Wealden and East Sussex

Our climate is changing as a result of human activity since the industrial revolution. If we are to avoid the most harmful effects of climate change, such as more extreme weather, warmer summers, wetter winters and increases in sea level, we must take action to reduce our impact on the environment now.

Wealden District Council is committed to protecting and improving our natural environment, reducing our emissions and enhancing quality of life for our residents. Working with our partners, businesses and the community, we are taking action.

Conservative-led Wealden District and East Sussex County councils have declared Climate Emergencies

  • 60% reduction in carbon since 2008; and an additional 13% reduction each year
  • Replacement of street lamps with LED  to benefit the environment
  • Carbon-neutral as soon as possible, and certainly by 2050.
  • Installing electric chargers in all Wealden-owned car parks
  • Conservative-led Wealden has the highest recycling rates in East Sussex.

CARING FOR AND ABOUT OUR ENVIRONMENT

Conservative run East Sussex County Council works with the Environment Agency, utility companies, land managers and planners as we rollout our Environment Plan to improve air and water quality, reduce carbon emissions, and move away from fossil fuels as we already have with our street lighting and all our buildings’ energy.

Transport for the South East, our partnership of the area’s 16 transport authorities, approved the 30-year Transport Strategy, which sets out an ambitious 2050 vision for the region with net-zero carbon, sustainable economic growth alongside integrated transport, digital and energy networks.

Delivering a county-wide Environment Strategy and a two-year action plan to reduce the Council’s own emissions to net zero as soon as possible.
