Wealden District Conservative Cllr Michael Lunn in Westminster discussing shocking Crowborough Army Camp news with local MPs.

Wealden Cllr Michael Lunn is not only working hard for constituents as a local Councillor, but he is also an extremely hard working farmer and runs the brilliant Uckfield Farmers Market which is always heavily attended by local residents, including Mims.

Whilst Crowborough isn't in Mims' constituency, she is aware residents of EGU who live close by are extremely concerned about what is happening in the Crowborough Training Camp as this will affect the Wealden district and services in our constituency.

Like many EGU residents, Mims was furious to read from the media that this Labour Government's Home Office and Ministry of Defence have been in private conversations with the Green Party and Liberal Democrat Leadership at Wealden District Council to potentially use the Crowborough Training Camp to house asylum seekers in the near future.

Under the previous Conservative Government, this Crowborough site was rejected outright. This was due to its layout and the difficulty in it being adapted and the extra costs that would be involved. Furthermore, modifying the site would put it in conflict with the local Council’s Crowborough National Landscape and planning policy.

This site has already been rejected as being wholly inappropriate.

Mims Davies, Conservative MP said:

Speaking with Wealden Cllr Michael Lunn who is also a local farmer and in charge of the fantastic Uckfield Farmers Market.

We met in Westminster and discussed the shocking news of the Crowborough Army Camp being used to house 600 male asylum seekers.

Not only have residents shared their concerns with me regarding their safety, but we also don't have the resources or infrastructure for 600 people to be dropped into our rural countryside.

Nus Ghani, MP for Crowborough, and fellow Wealden MP Dr Kieran Mullan and I wrote to Wealden District Council leadership requesting answers to our questions, we are still waiting.

I also raised this issue on behalf of constituents as a UQ (Urgent Question) in Parliament earlier in the week asking the Minister to work with WDC to carry out public meetings with residents to voice their very serious and valid concerns.
