Two new dementia initiatives are being launched in Wealden helping to improve levels of care and support.

The first session of Crowborough’s new Dementia Memory Café will be held on Thursday 29 November at the Woodlands Care Home, Beacon Road, Crowborough, TN6 1UD. It will be a Singing Session with the help and vocal talents of Dementia Support East Sussex.

It’s open to everyone. It provides a chance for people with dementia and their carers to meet up, socialise and take part in a range of activities. The first session is from 2-4pm on Thursday 29 November. The memory café sessions will then be on the last Thursday of the month, alternating the venue between Heatherview Care home, also in Beacon Road, Crowborough, TN6 1AS; and Woodlands.

The second initiative is the Hailsham Dementia Forum. It launches on Friday 7 December at Bowes House, 25 Battle Road, Hailsham, BN27 1TJ. It will take place from 10am till 12noon at Bowes House.

“This is the launch event for a new dementia forum for one of Wealden’s biggest towns, Hailsham,” said Councillor Claire Dowling, Wealden Cabinet member for Public Health and Community Safety. It provides an opportunity for people who are affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias to come together to discuss support, share information and organise events. Through the Wealden Dementia Action Alliance, we have helped establish forums in other towns and villages. These have proved to be of great benefit both for people living with dementia, and their friends and family.

“We hope the meeting on 7 December will pave the way for a calendar of events for Hailsham in 2019. We wish the new forum every success.”

Among the other events for people with dementia taking place in the run up to Christmas are:

  • A Movies Make Memories screening of the classic film White Christmas on Friday 30 November at Ninfield Village Hall from 2- 4pm.
  • The Polegate Memory Café meets on Thursday 6 December at the Polegate Community Centre from 2-4pm. There will be Christmas crafts activities.
  • Polegate Dementia Forum takes place on Thursday 13 December in Joan Hughes Court from 10am till 12noon.
  • Friday 14 December sees a special Movies Make Memories compilation screening at Hailsham Pavilion Cinema, Hailsham, of Morecombe and Wise Christmas Specials. The sunshine starts at 2pm.
