With Easter just around the corner, many of us are stocking up on chocolate eggs and other delicious Easter treats!
“In lockdown we have seen an increase in household recycling and especially packaging,” says Conservative councillor Roy Galley, Wealden Portfolio Holder for Waste Management. “Let’s continue to recycle everything we can and keep this up over the Easter break.”
Whilst manufacturers and retailers have significantly cut their Easter egg wrapping, there is still a great deal of packaging left. The UK’s Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) estimates that the UK will discard around 3,000 tonnes of packaging each year (based on sales in 2016) which is a whole lot for just one weekend of celebrations.
We are therefore asking residents to put ‘egg-stra’ special effort into recycling and reducing their waste this Easter.
Here are some top tips to reduce your waste over the holidays:
- Cut down on waste by choosing eggs with minimal packaging. As much as a third of the weight of an Easter egg is in the packaging.
- Make your own chocolate eggs. Avoid the chocolate egg packaging altogether by making your own eggs using melted chocolate and a mould.
- Recycle cardboard, moulded plastic packaging and foil wrapping from your Easter eggs. Please remember to flatten any cardboard boxes before putting them into the recycling bin.
- Reuse your leftovers. Turn your leftovers from Easter Sunday into some tasty midweek meals. It saves money and it’s better for the environment. Visit the Love Food Hate Waste website for some quick and easy recipes.
- Easter clear out. If you’re thinking of having a clear out, please think about how you could reuse old items. Refurbishing furniture, using online marketplaces or donating to charity are great ways to give items a second lease of life.
- Easter walk. If you are going for a walk, think of the environment and take your litter home.
