Times Radio's Matt Chorley: Big Things – Ukrainians. What life is like for Ukrainians after arriving in the UK?
A big shout out on it for the people in East Sussex, especially those in Mayfield and surrounding villages, who opened their doors and hearts to those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.
This local campaign was headed by Caroline Quill, daughter of Wealden DC’s councillor Dr Brian Redman (pictured), and her friend Sarah Green. At the start of the conflict they realised help was going to be needed and began searching for Sponsors in advance of the Homes For Ukraine Visa Scheme. Currently the Government funded fee payable to hosts is topped up by Wealden District Council.
Sarah and Caroline, together with other members of Mayfield village have opened their Mayfield homes and are hopeful their current guests will stay for some time. Svetlana, who is sponsored by Sarah and Matt Green and Olga who is sponsored by Brian and Deveda Redman also joined the interview.
However, with many of the first arrivals now wishing to move on, living and working independently, the search is now on for properties to rent.
Anyone who has a property they would wish to let, or become Hosts are asked to contact Wealden Housing Options Team, 01323 443322, for details.
In closing the interview, it is clear that Olga is pleased it doesn’t rain as much as she’d expected! Svetlana is now clearly enjoying and exploring Mayfield and the surrounding countryside.
