The phenomenal rollout of the vaccine continues with nearly 37 million people having received their first dose and those aged 36 and over now eligible for the jab.
To date more than 1.8 million vaccines have been given in Sussex since the start of the programme, and 116,711 vaccines were delivered last week!
I returned to Uckfield Meads Medical Centre to witness their first Covid-19 vaccination clinic for the second phase of the vaccination programme being rolled out in Wealden. It was my absolute priority to ensure that people under 50 can also benefit from accessing the vaccine locally without lengthy travel to mass vaccination centres in Brighton or Eastbourne and I am pleased that this has been achieved.
Here is a quick update on what else I have been up to in Parliament and in Wealden over the last couple of weeks:
Advocating for Wealden care homes
Following a meeting with care home workers in Wealden & locals with family in care homes, I raised their concerns on isolation & care home visits directly with the PM in Parliament.
Supporting Rotherfield St Martin
It's Dementia Awareness Week and I am supporting Rotherfield St Martin and Wealden Dementia Action Alliance in making Wealden dementia friendly. You too can make small changes to help us achieve this goal! An online shop has been set up, selling handmade Forget me not brooches from which all proceeds go towards supporting people living with dementia in Wealden. Get yours here.
Visit to Arlington Bluebell Walk
May is national walking month and the fantastic Arlington Bluebell Walk, managed by John McCutchan, is the perfect magical refuge with spectacular views. Their ticket price supports local charities, so it’s a win-win all round! Book your visit here.
Meeting with Wealden farmers
After months of virtual meetings, it was lovely to get together with Wealden representatives of the National Farmers' Union to catch up on my work with the Sussex Police to tackle rural crime in Wealden & the importance of buying local to support our great British produce. I am proud that we have a thriving and dynamic rural economy in Wealden and I will always work to support our local farmers.
Completion of Eridge Stream habitat project
Great news for Wealden anglers! I visited Eridge Stream to see the fantastic improvements that have been made after I secured £20,000 from the Environment Agency for the project. Its success is already showing as new colonies of fish have been spotted in the improved section of the stream.
Celebrating English Tourism week at Michelham Priory
Ahead of English Tourism Week, which begins this Saturday 22 May, I caught up with Michelham Priory management on progress that has been made to restoring the historical moat. Earlier in the week I also caught up with the Environment Agency to get an update on their works. The Priory and its gardens are now fully open. Why not visit this summer and support this local heritage gem!
I hope that I am soon able to return to holding surgeries all across Wealden in person. But in the meantime, I continue to hold regular virtual surgeries to listen to your concerns and offer help. If you need urgent assistance, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
and provide as much detail as possible about your query.
