Wealden MP Nus Ghani met with Berenice Blurton, the Chair of Mayfield Evening Women’s Institute, to celebrate their 100 year anniversary.

On March 6th, Mayfield Evening Women’s Institute will be celebrating 100 years since their formation, and to mark the occasion, they are hosting a memorabilia exhibition in the Scout and Guide Hall in Mayfield.

The exhibition will take place on March 20th, from 10am to 4pm. On display will be memorabilia and items charting the history of Mayfield Evening Women’s Institute, including items found in The Keep, a world-class centre that archives the history of East Sussex.

Commenting on the anniversary, Ms Ghani said:“It’s great to see Mayfield Evening Women’s Institute celebrating their 100 year anniversary.

“Women’s Institutes across the country have done so much for the empowerment of women, and the exhibition will showcase the amazing history of our local Women’s Institutes.

“2018 is a momentous year for women. Celebrating Mayfield Evening Women’s Institute’s anniversary is part of a wider commemoration of the centenary of women first getting the vote and recognising the achievements of Wealden Women.

“I am collaborating with groups like Mayfield Evening Women’s Institute and Bridge Cottage in Uckfield to mark this centenary year, and truly make 2018 a year about female empowerment.

“It's hard to believe that 100 years ago women in Wealden didn't have the vote, yet in 2015 I was elected as the first female MP for Wealden. The women from 1917 helped start that journey and I hope women across Wealden will be inspired to get involved in Women’s Institutes and politics.”
