Today, Wealden Conservative Association have announced that they will give every registered voter in the Wealden constituency the chance to choose the candidate they want to run on behalf of the Conservative Party in Wealden at the general election in 2015.
'Open Primaries' are commonly used in the United States of America and are designed to open up party political candidate selection to the public but are a rare concept in the United Kingdom.
Huw Merriman, Chairman of Wealden Conservatives said:
“Usually, party members select their candidate and the public then vote for each party's candidate in the general election.
“We want to open up the selection to ensure the people of Wealden get a real choice over who is their next MP.”
Huw believes that this new method will help build trust and interest in the democratic process.
“With the decline of membership of traditional parties and public scepticism of the political process, we wanted to give every voter the chance to be involved at the earliest possible stage. It will be straightforward and inclusive. The public will be able to cast their ballot at an open hustings for the candidate they prefer.”
Wealden Conservative Association’s 'open primary' is due to be held on Thursday, 5th December and they are currently searching for a venue that is both central and big enough to hold the anticipated turn-out.
To construct the short-list to go to this open meeting, Wealden Conservative are asking for applications from approved Conservative Party candidates.
Any voter wishing to pre-register to take part should send their details to firstname.lastname@example.org or call the constituency office on 01323 489289.
