My name is Bruce Broughton; I have been happily married for forty-two years and we have three lovely grown-up children and four, nearly five, grandchildren. I have known Hailsham since I was six years old and am very much looking forward to serving here.
I was born in Battle and grew up in Hastings. I emigrated to Australia by myself, aged 18. Three fantastic years later, on my return, and having inherited £600, I started my own business in structural steelwork. The business evolved over the following 50 years. I retired three years ago leaving our business, now in France, under the care of our son William.
During that time I qualified as a member of the Chartered Institute of Builders and as an NHBC registered House Builder.
My principal hobby is photography: until recently I was the South East Regional Organiser for the Royal Photographic Society, chairing both the Standing Committee for all ROs in the UK. I also chaired Repcom, reporting directly to Council and the RPS President. I am the President of the Rotary club of Uckfield until June 2021.
Having now divested myself of all the above, I am looking forward to proactively dedicating my energies and experience to County Councillorship.
My previous experience is as a District Councillor, representing St John’s in Crowborough. My principal involvements and primary interests were with planning and leisure facilities. In my business life I had drawn up many successful planning and building regulations applications, most in English but some in France - in French of course. I feel that this does give me an edge when reviewing applications and policy from the Council's point of view.
Councils are obliged to provide more housing within the county. One of my main aims as a County Councillor will be to ensure that improvements in roads, parking and all other infrastructure keeps up with these, and that developments are of a safe, pleasing, and characterful nature, worthy of being called home.
Some 70% of County Council income is rightly spent in the care sector and redeveloping schools. Great progress is being made and I look forward to working hard to continue this work.
When elected I hope to meet you and will do my very best for Hailsham Market Division and East Sussex.
