Cllr Ann Newton

District Councillor for Framfield
Officer of Wealden Conservative Association
Deputy Leader of Wealden District Council

Wealden District Councillor for Framfield & Cross-in-Hand  (including Blackboys)

Ann was first elected as Wealden District Councillor for the Framfield Ward in 2007.   She was re-elected in 2011.  In 2009 she became Chairman of Planning Committee North until September 2012 when she was asked to join the Cabinet initially as Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services until May 2013 when she took over the role of Portfolio Holder for Planning and Development and Deputy Leader of the Council.

She is currently in the process of seeing through the various statutory parts of the Local Plan – the Strategic Sites Examination whilst working on the Delivery and Site Allocations Plan.  She Chairs the Local Development Framework Committee and the East Sussex Strategic Planning Members Group.

Since becoming a District Councillor she has sat on a variety of other Committees including Environment Scrutiny and Licensing plus the Employees’ Consultative Group and Personnel Committee.

Over those years has spent that time putting every effort into her various roles for the strategic benefit Wealden and to also ensure that Framfield & Waldron Ward has a strong voice on Wealden District Council.

Ann has lived in Blackboys for twenty three years and after ‘retiring’ from a career in London to bring up her four children; became a Parish Councillor in 1995, then went on to become Parish Clerk in 1999.  All her children are now at Heathfield Community College after moving on from Blackboys CE School.   She is a Governor at Blackboys Church of England School, a Committee member of the Friends of St Thomas à Becket Church, Framfield, and a Committee member, Heathfield Partnership, Sports and Leisure Committee.

Items of interest or concern tend to reach her desk with whatever hat she happens to have on quite quickly!  Her day is spent dealing with local issues where she hopes to achieve what the area wants.

Ann was elected district councillor for the new ward of Framfield and Cross-in-Hand in May 2019's district council elections.

Wealden residents have the opportunity to say whether Wealden District Council’s Proposed Local Plan has been correctly drawn up and is sound, based on the evidence.

An Edenbridge man was fined £461 and ordered to pay Council costs of nearly £1,000 for a fly tipping offence in Wealden District. Richard Cormick (48) of Hop Garden Close, Edenbridge, pleaded guilty at Hastings Magistrates earlier this month for failing in his duty of care.

Two major housing developments in Wealden have triumphed in this year’s Sussex Heritage Trust Awards. One, Lavender Fields, involved the redevelopment of the former Isfield army depot into a mix of 39 new homes and live/work units.

The new Wealden Local Plan Draft Proposed Submission Document contains a range of environmental measures to ensure growth can proceed without causing irreversible damage to our regionally important ecology. It will be presented to a meeting of Wealden's Full Council today - 18 July.
