Cllr Sylvia Tidy

County Councillor for Crowborough South & St John's
Vice-President of Wealden Conservatives
Chairman of Crowborough Conservatives

Cllr Sylvia Tidy is the East Sussex County Councillor for Crowborough South and St Johns and the Lead Member for Children and Families.

Elected in 2005, Sylvia has the following ESCC responsibilities:

  • Cabinet
  • Corporate Parenting Panel
  • ESBT Strategic Commissioning Board
  • Full Council
  • Joint Advisory Committee for Schools
  • Lead Member for Children and Families

and has been appointed to the following outside bodies:

  • Conservators of Ashdown Forest
  • High Weald - Joint Advisory Committee
  • Wealden and Rother Renewal Partnership

Being a Councillor is its own reward. I would recommend it to anyone. It’s very worthwhile, extremely interesting and you learn huge amounts. When something happens and you get an outcome, a decision, it’s great. It keeps your brain working, too. It’s important that we work together to achieve results. I’ll be happy when I see Crowborough being even more successful, the retail sector thriving and less speeding.

Affiliation with other bodies:

  • Uckfield Community Technology College (Governor)
  • High Weald AONB JAC
  • Farleys Yard Education Trust (Chairman)
  • Herne Junior School (Governor)

I was elected as a county councillor in May 2005, although I have been councillor for Chiddingly and East Hoathly on Wealden District Council since 1995. I share the Crowborough division with Councillor Richard Stodgon. Key issues in this area are reducing traffic speed, particularly in residential areas, tackling the perception of anti-social behaviour and stimulating retail activity as there are too many empty shops in the town.

I joined the Wealden Conservative Association in 1982 and became chairman of the women's committee and the Association. I then became a district councillor and, later, my friends and associates persuaded me to run for the County Council and I'm proud to be able to represent them.

Representing an urban area as a county councillor is very different from being a councillor for a rural ward. My division covers a smaller and more condensed area. Being a councillor can be tough, especially when you can't help people through no fault of your own or, for example, if you are faced with the lack of resources.

I love the South Downs and the beautiful countryside. I moved here in 1958 and married a local farmer. I have lived on the same farm for 45 years. We have four children. We are now semi-retired – we still have a small beef herd but we don't milk cows anymore. Council work and the farm keep me pretty busy but luckily, housework will wait patiently – it never nags to get done, so it doesn't cause a problem. I'm interested in all issues that affect the countryside. I'm a keen gardener and I enjoy reading. I also sing in the church choir and ring church bells.
