Nusrat Ghani MP

Nus Ghani was born in Birmingham in 1972 and educated in state schools before studying at Birmingham City University. After graduating she headed to Leeds for a master's degree before beginning her career in politics. Her employment has included the charities Age UK and Breakthrough Breast Cancer as well as later work for the BBC World Service.

Ms Ghani first stood as a parliamentary candidate for Birmingham Ladywood at the 2010 general election before being selected in December 2013 as the prospective parliamentary candidate for Wealden on the announcement of retirement by the sitting MP, Charles Hendry

In the 2015 general election Nus Ghani became the first female MP to hold the seat being elected with a majority of 22,967. In the 2017 general election Nus won 61.2% of the votes in Wealden, increasing her majority to 23,628. In July 2017, 

I am delighted most recently to have been appointed as a Government Whip and a Minister in the Department for Transport. In this role, I am responsible for:

  • buses and taxis
  • high speed rail (HS2)
  • maritime
  • Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)
  • maritime security
  • skills and apprenticeships
  • the Year of Engineering

'DON'T MISS OUT ON LOTTERY FUNDS', URGES MP

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, is encouraging local charities and community groups to apply for funding from a pot of over £3 million that has been raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

MP VISITS AT CANADIAN WAR MEMORIAL COMMEMORATION

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, joined with members of the Crowborough Royal British Legion, and cadets from Crowborough, at the Canadian War Memorial, to commemorate 9 Canadian soldiers, of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, who were killed by a flying bomb on July 5th 1944.

MP WELCOMES ADDITIONAL MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, as welcomed news that children and young people in Wealden are to benefit from additional mental health support. All schools and colleges in Wealden will be offered mental health training as part of the Government’s commitment to providing more joined up care.

NUS - A 'BEER CHAMPION'

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, received a special award, in recognition of her support for the Long Live the Local campaign and helping to secure consecutive freezes in beer duty.

MP VISITS BATTERED PUB

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, visited the King’s Arms, Rotherfield, in order to assess the recent damage caused by HGVs and to meet Chris and Antonia, who run the pub, to offer her support.

MP MEETS NEW TOP COP

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, met with Tanya Jones, the new Chief Superintendent (East) for Sussex Police.

Chief Superintendent Jones will have overall responsibility for policing the Wealden constituency as well focusing on crime reduction strategies. 

MAYFIELD'S NEW POST OFFICE OPENS

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, opened a new Post Office in Mayfield. Accompanied by Cllr. Rupert Simmons, Nus met with Mrs Jo Eates, the new Post-Master in Wealden, alongside staff, and members of the public to cut a ribbon to open the Post Office.

MP AT MAYFIELD SCHOOL

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, visited Mayfield Primary School, accompanied by Councillor Rupert Simmons, and she was taken on a tour by students.

MP IN CROWBOROUGH FOR NATIONAL CARE HOME OPEN DAY

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, joined with Greg Rose, The Mayor of Crowborough, in order to celebrate National Care Home Open Day, at Woodlands Care Home, in Crowborough.

During Nus’ visit, she officially unveiled a new Sea-Side themed corridor in the Care Home.

MP ATTENDS CROWBOROUGH ARMED FORCES DAY CELEBRATIONS

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, attended the Armed Forces Day celebrations at Crowborough for a parade down the High Street. 

The event was organised by the Crowborough Branch of the Royal British Legion, with cooperation from the town council.
