Nusrat Ghani MP

Nus Ghani was born in Birmingham in 1972 and educated in state schools before studying at Birmingham City University. After graduating she headed to Leeds for a master's degree before beginning her career in politics. Her employment has included the charities Age UK and Breakthrough Breast Cancer as well as later work for the BBC World Service.

Ms Ghani first stood as a parliamentary candidate for Birmingham Ladywood at the 2010 general election before being selected in December 2013 as the prospective parliamentary candidate for Wealden on the announcement of retirement by the sitting MP, Charles Hendry

In the 2015 general election Nus Ghani became the first female MP to hold the seat being elected with a majority of 22,967. In the 2017 general election Nus won 61.2% of the votes in Wealden, increasing her majority to 23,628. In July 2017, 

I am delighted most recently to have been appointed as a Government Whip and a Minister in the Department for Transport. In this role, I am responsible for:

  • high speed rail (HS2)
  • maritime
  • Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA)

  • skills and apprenticeships
  • the Year of Engineering

MP CELEBRATES SUCCESS OF YEAR OF ENGINEERING

Speaking to an audience of Ministers, MPs, engineering professionals, and school children, at a reception in Parliament, Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, reflected on the success of the Year of Engineering.

MP SUPPORTS WEALDEN BUSINESS AT GEOSCIENCE FORUM 

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, spoke at a City of London Geoscience Forum event recently, discussing the importance of diversity across the extractive industries sector.

The panel, chaired by Sir Geoffrey Palmer, consisted of Nus and experts from mining, geology and venture capital.

WADHURST'S INNOVATIVE NEW HOUSING

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, officially unveiled a new show-home at Waters Reach, a development of new homes in Wadhurst by Rydon Homes. After cutting the ribbon, Nus was given a preview of the show-home, ahead of its opening to the public.

'CALL THE MIDWIFE' STAR IN CROWBOROUGH

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, attended the opening of a new set of birthing rooms at the Crowborough Birth Centre, part of the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

MP AND FARMERS MEET MINISTER

Nusrat Ghani MP secured a meeting for Stephen and Phil Hook of Hook Farm, with Robert Goodwill MP, Minister for Farming at DEFRA. Hook Farm, based in West Hoathly, is the country’s leading provider of raw organic milk, and a significant employer in Wealden.

MP PUSHES FOR BETTER BROADBAND

Responding to the requests of a large number of constituents, Nusrat Ghani MP met with BT Openreach to discuss the woeful internet provision in rural villages across Wealden.
